Medical Oncology

The medical oncologists at the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center use powerful cancer-fighting drugs, hormones and immuno-stimulants to help the body stop or slow the growth of malignant cells. Chemotherapy is a therapeutic method utilizing drugs that interfere with the cancer's ability to reproduce and grow.

Surgery & Minimally Invasive Technologies

The inpatient and outpatient surgical suites at Horizon Medical Center are equipped for the most advanced surgical procedures, including video-guided, microscopic and laser surgery and radio-frequency ablation.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy | Radiation Oncology

The Sarah Cannon Cancer Center provides conventional oncology services as well as Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. IMRT is one of the newest technologies available and Horizon is offering this service with the Varian Clinac 21 EX Linear Accelerator with 3-D Conformal and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. This computerized system controls the high-energy x-ray beam in order to conform the treatment to the tumor’s shape and volume. This minimizes the damage to surrounding healthy tissue making a tumor that was once untreatable, treatable. IMRT treats irregularly shaped lesions in the direct vicinity of critical structures.

The advantages of high resolution IMRT include:

  • The highest level of patient comfort with less side effects from radiation
  • Superior dose distributions with simultaneous improvements in dose conformation
  • Critical structure avoidance and target dose homogeneity
